Niagara Gazette — LEGISLATURE

Lawmakers to consider RFPs for machine storage

The Niagara County Legislature’s Democratic minority is sponsoring a bill to start seeking bids for storage of the county’s voting machines and equipment.

The matter is on the agenda for the Legislature’s Tuesday meeting.

Currently, the equipment is stored in a Newfane building, 1961 Transit Road in Burt, which is owned by Lockport developer David Ulrich. The legislature has a five-year agreement with Ulrich’s Clear Opportunity Properties LLC to lease 28,000 square feet of space inside the Transit Road building. The deal is for about $650,000 over the five-year period.

The lease was agreed to in October 2012 and needs 120 days notice before the county can end it. It automatically renews each Aug. 1, unless notice is given.

Tuesday’s resolution is sponsored by Legislators Dennis F. Virtuoso, D-Niagara Falls, Jason A. Zona, D-Niagara Falls, Owen T. Steed, D-Niagara Falls and Mark J. Grozio, D-Niagara Falls. The four make up the Legislature’s minority.

Before being moved, voting machines and county records were being kept at the Davison Road county property. The move was necessary, county officials said, because the building is dilapidated and leaking.

There was discussion at the committee level of starting the bidding process last summer, but nothing appeared before the Legislature.
